Summary: Harry has given Adam and werewolf!Lucas tickets to the pantomime
The werewolf had been enthralled throughout the pantomime. As Harry had booked them a box, he was able to stand with his paws on the front of the box and watch the performance, his tail wagging. And he had also been free to bounce around the box during the dance numbers, even though, as far as Adam could see the werewolf’s moves bore no resemblance to what was happening on stage. Adam did, however, draw the line at him joining in the singing, having no wish for them to be summarily ejected.
Everything went very well until the curtain call. The werewolf watched as the performers all came on stage and then turned his head to give Adam a questioning look.
“You do understand this is a play and not real life, so the baddies aren’t really locked up in jail, don’t you?” Adam said.
The werewolf gave him the sort of pitying look Ros gave inexperienced agents from other sections when they made a particularly obvious comment.
“You think there’s something odd going on?”
The werewolf nodded and headed for the back of the box.
“We can’t just…” Adam began, but the werewolf used a paw to open the door and rushed down the corridor. “Oh, clearly we can!”
Somehow the werewolf found his way to the door into the backstage area and charged through. An assistant tried to prevent Adam following, but Adam muttered, “I’m with him!” and brushed past him.
He reached the werewolf just as he was pushing open the door of the main baddie’s dressing room. He entered and his hackles rose. A couple of the other members of the cast joined Adam, demanding to know what was going on.
The actor inside shouted, “Call that dog off me!”
“That’s not Mike’s voice,” someone exclaimed.
“Who is it?” another asked.
The imposter shoved his way past them and grabbed the leading lady, saying, “Let me go, or this pretty lady won’t look as pretty in tomorrow’s performance.”
“Okay, take it easy,” Adam said.
Meanwhile the werewolf crept out and then sprang at the imposter, knocking him onto his back. He then stood over him and using his teeth pulled the man’s false beard off.
“So that’s what’s been going on,” Adam said. “Harry was right, you were involved.” Then looking around at the other actors, he added, “Police business. I’ll arrange for him to be collected.” He made a quick phone call and then called the werewolf off, before tying the man up.
As soon as the imposter was secured, the leading lady threw her arms round the werewolf and gave him a kiss, saying, “My hero!”
As soon as the imposter had been taken away, Adam and the werewolf returned to the Grid, where Harry was waiting for them.
“It was the perfect disguise,” Adam said. “Draganov paid Mike Travers, the chief baddie, to leave before the curtain call, and went on in his place. Then in costume he had no trouble making the contacts he needed, before being one of the last to leave, so no-one noticed.”
“Excellent,” Harry replied. “But what’s he got now?” He pointed at the werewolf who was proudly holding something pink and shiny.
“That is Cinderella’s slipper, given to him by a very grateful leading lady.”
