oOo

Two of the three young women – Hikaru, and Umi – left on unexplained errands, leaving him alone in the dim garret with Miss Windam. She made both of them tea with a kettle sat on top of the little stove in the corner of the room. There was a small jug of milk on the window ledge; she apologised for the gust of wind as she brought it in, and the lack of sugar.

Ferio waited until she had sat down again (and noted with amusement that she sat as elegantly as if it was a throne beneath her, not a packing crate,) before asking anything more. But before he could begin, she nodded at the chipped mug he was cradling, with a small smile. “You may drink without concern, I promise there is nothing untoward in this drink. The milk should have been cold enough it will not even scald you now.”

He looked down at the drink in question. “What did you give me, downstairs?”

“…Have you ever been to a summer-underground?” She asked, and sipped her drink quietly while he stared.

“A magic dive? No – I never saw any point in finding one, I’ve no aptitude for magic at all. The doctors tested me thoroughly when they pulled me out of the water without a memory. Do you mean that there’s one here – that that’s what I was drinking?” He blinked. “What you were drinking, too?”

“That was a particularly nice whiskey, with just a little enhancement added to it. Enough that Miss Umi could use it to… encourage you to talk to me, when you drank. I was drinking to replace what I had used earlier today, and in case my power was needed to deal with you.”

Ferio shook his head, and winced slightly as it ached. “If that’s what just a bit of magic tastes like, then no wonder people’ll break the law for it, even without what it does. But why did you give it to me, anyway? Out of everyone there…”

“Clover has a regular clientele. The lady who owns both the bar and the business below it has certain… skills of her own, which draw some people in, and make others less likely to do so. You had no trace of magic about you, but you had been there quite some time, without enjoying your drink at all. I rather thought you might be an undercover detective, looking for the entrance to the summerland. But you didn’t seem to be watching people enough for that, either… it was enough I felt I should ask a few questions.”

Drinking slowly, Ferio let the tea soothe his headache as he pondered this. “I don’t know what help I can be to you.” He warned. “I know I knew a girl called Emeraude, once, but I don’t know, how, or why, or how I might help you.”

Miss Windam smiled at him. “Given the items we removed from you earlier, I suspect you may be able to help in a variety of ways.” She drank the last of her tea, and stood, reaching for the coat which had been blanketing him when he woke. “But first, we will see if we can learn any more about you. Miss Umi is already going to ask an acquaintance or two what they might know, though both are prone to speaking in riddles.”

“People who might know about me?”

“Not – precisely. That is, even Clef is something of a what, as well as a who… He is the one who procures the magic for Clover. And now, if you will finish with your drink, I will take you to meet Windam, and see if he can provide us with any clues to your identity or your connection to Emeraude.”

“Windam? …Your father?” Ferio guessed, before draining the last of the tea and setting the mug down.

Fuu shook her head. “No. My patron. I have taken his name out of respect; Miss Umi and Miss Hikaru do the same with their own patrons. But Windam is… an introduction will be easier than an explanation, I feel. If you will trust me?”

“I drank the tea.” He pointed out, smiling at her, and winning a smile in return. Ferio pulled his coat on, and waited as she brought out his weapons and lockpicks from below a loose floorboard. “Even if you do tease me with puzzles instead of explanations.”

“I do appreciate puzzles.” Miss Windam handed him his boots, and sat to lace her own. “But I do not mean to tease.”

“…I may be disappointed by that.” Ferio said, mostly to see how she would respond, and there was a blush on her face now but she was still smiling a little.

“I trust you will not be disappointed with Windam. Now, if you are ready?”

She locked the room behind them, and they left through a back door, avoiding the noise of the bar. Ferio’s head cleared further as the cold air hit it, but no regrets were stirring yet. For now, he was happy to see where Miss Windam and her friends would take him.

So I just got around to reading this and although I know you don't need any more AUs to work on, I'd love to see more in this 'verse.
