Daniel can feel the pull of Jacob trying to heal him with the Goa’uld device. Maybe it will work, if Jacob tries hard enough and for long enough, maybe it won’t and Daniel will never fully recover, but either way, he doesn’t want it. That’s not the kind of healing he needs.

He’s done so much in his time with SG-1, but he sacrificed himself willingly for the sake of a planet, and even though healing his body might save his life, it won’t heal his soul, spirit, whatever. He’s tired and his body’s holding him back. He’s ready to move on, wants to see what else is out there, to learn what more he might be capable of. This doesn’t have to be the end of him, it could be a new beginning, but only if his friends are willing to let him go. So he asks Jack.

“Tell Jacob to stop.”

Jack isn’t exactly willing, he’s always been stubborn, but then so is Daniel, and this matters to him. He needs to make Jack understand, because he’s not giving up, he’s reaching for something greater, and who knows? Maybe he’ll be able to do more to help his friends this way than he ever could as a human, limited by a physical body and its attendant frailties.

It touches him deeply that Jack listens and gives the order, but in a way convincing him was the easy part. Leaving his friends behind, along with everything he’s ever known, is going to be harder. He doesn’t know what’s ahead of him, where he’s going or what he’ll do, but he knows what he’s giving up and it makes his heart ache. Still, he made his decision, and he doesn’t regret it.

“I’m gonna miss you guys.”

Time to go.

The End
