Anywhere But Here Challenge: Pee-wee's Playhouse: Fanfic: Stars
Title: Stars
Fandom: Pee-wee's Playhouse
Rating: G
Length: 1286
Prompt: Anywhere but here
Content notes: Darcie is my self-insert for this fandom. She's in her 20s. Written in memory of Paul Reubens (z"l). May his memory be a blessing. I will never stop defending him.
Summary: At another party at the Playhouse, Pee-wee ignores his girlfriend too many times.
The sun shone through the windows of the Playhouse, casting a vibrant glow on the colorful walls and decorations that adorned every corner. Inside, excitement buzzed through the air as Pee-wee ran around with a whirlwind of energy, preparing for, as he put it, "the greatest party the Playhouse had ever seen".
Amidst the hustle and bustle, Pee-wee's girlfriend, Darcie, sat near the Flowers on the windowsill, watching her boyfriend's chaotic ways, a smile on her face. Like Pee-wee, Darcie had an infectious enthusiasm for life and a penchant for the unusual.
"H-hello, Darcie!" Conky 3000 spoke. "R-ready for the p-party?"
"I am. Isn't Pee-wee's enthusiasm just so… cute?" she swooned.
Conky looked from Darcie to Pee-wee. "I don't know if c-cute's the right word."
Darcie giggled. "He's like a whirlwind of creativity and energy."
Conky nodded. "He's in a bit of a d-decorating frenzy spe-spectacle."
Pee-wee was hanging streamers from the ceiling with wild enthusiasm, jumping off of any surface he could to hang them -- a lot of work for something that could be done if they had a ladder.
Darcie sighed dreamily. "He can make the most ordinary things extraordinary. That's one of many reasons I love him."
"Conky!!" Pee-wee called out.
"Y-yes, Pee-wee?"
"What's today's secret word?"
The little card with the secret word popped out of Conky's midsection, and Pee-wee happily took it. "The secret word of the day is… whimsy!" Pee-wee looked around at his friends. "And we all know what to do when someone says the secret word, right? Scream real loud! Let's try it."
Pee-wee looked around at his friends again, wondering who he could try it with. Finally, he looked at Darcie. "So, Darcie…" he gestured to his decorations. "What do you think of my decorations?"
"Well," Darcie began. "I think they've got a certain kind of whimsy --"
"AAAAAAAAAA!" Everyone screamed.
Darcie was laughing too much to even continue.
* * *
As the party kicked off, Pee-wee was on cloud nine. Everyone -- well, nearly everyone was there! Mrs. Steve and Ms. Renee were talking about gossip in Puppetland while snacking on some chips.
Ricardo and Tito were talking about soccer and summertime activities in a mix of Spanish and English, which Pee-wee listened to with curiosity.
Dixie was talking with Chairry about The King of Cartoons' absence, Miss Yvonne just wanted Ricardo to notice her, and Captain Carl was shyly making eyes at Cowboy Curtis, hoping he'd sit with him.
Darcie had been at Pee-wee's side all night as they mingled with everyone, but she couldn't help but notice that he seemed as if he had been trying to get away from her, his attention shifting to the guests, and ignoring her in the process.
At first, Darcie had been just as immersed in conversation with the other guests, but as the evening wore on, she felt a growing sense of unease. She had a question for Pee-wee, something she had been excited to share with him, but each time she tried to get his attention, he was deeply engrossed in conversations with other guests.
Her initial attempts were met with Pee-wee nodding along distractedly, his eyes darting around the room. He'd occasionally interject with a quick "uh-huh" or "that's great", but his focus seemed to be everywhere but on Darcie.
Frustration and hurt gnawed at Darcie's heart as she watched Pee-wee chat with various guests, completely oblivious to how she felt. She cleared her throat and tried again, this time asking a more direct question about something they had planned together.
"Pee-wee," Darcie began, her voice hopeful, "did you get a chance to check out that new board game I mentioned earlier?"
Pee-wee's response was a distracted smile and a vague, "Oh yeah, that sounds fun, Darcie!" before he was whisked away by someone else pulling at his attention.
Darcie couldn't help but feel a pang of hurt at being brushed off so many times, even if it was unintentionally. She felt as if she was invisible. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she muttered to herself, "I'd rather be anywhere but here.", heading out the Playhouse's back door, and into the pool area.
Unbeknownst to Darcie, Randy and Pterri had heard her words. Randy couldn't help the sly grin that spread across his face. "Oh, this is going to be good."
Pterri had always had a soft spot for Darcie and watched her fondly every time she was at the Playhouse. When he heard Darcie's words, his heart sank. He flapped his wings anxiously, muttering, "Oh no, oh no! Darcie's upset! What if she leaves and never comes back?!"
Randy, on the other hand, found the situation rather amusing. He slid over to Pterri and whispered, "Looks like your favorite human is in a bit of a pickle, huh? What are you going to do about it, Puh-terri?"
Pterri's eyes widened with panic. "I -- I have to tell Pee-wee! He needs to know!" With that, Pterri took off, flying around the Playhouse, and over to Pee-wee. He landed in front of Pee-wee, breathing heavily. "P-Pee-wee, I have to tell you something."
"Not now, Pterri, I'm busy." Pee-wee replied, in the middle of a conversation with both Ricardo and Tito.
Pterri flapped his wings in a panic. "It's important!"
"What is it?" Pee-wee sighed, annoyed.
"Darcie… she's upset. Heard her say she'd rather be anywhere but here… she's leaving."
Pee-wee's eyes widened, and he looked around the Playhouse. There was no sign of Darcie anywhere. "Do you know where she went?"
Pterri gestured with a wing. "Out there!" he pointed to the back door.
"Thanks, Pterri." Pee-wee gave him a reassuring pat on the back. As he headed out the back door, he knew he had to talk to Darcie and make things right.
Darcie was sitting on the deck, at the edge of the pool, legs dangling in the cool water. She wiped at her eyes, trying to get the tears to stop.
"Darcie?" Pee-wee said, softly.
She looked up at Pee-wee, her eyes a mix of hurt and frustration. "You were so busy with everyone else… you didn't even notice I was gone." She said, her voice quivering.
Pee-wee's brow furrowed as he sat down beside her. "I didn't mean to ignore you, Darcie… I just got caught up in the excitement. I'm sorry."
Their eyes met, and the tension between them began to dissolve. "I just want to spend time with you, my sweet string-bean. I thought we were alike in that way." Darcie admitted, her voice softening.
Pee-wee reached out and took her hand in his. "You're right, Darcie. I've been a big goofball… I promise I'll make it up to you."
Under the starlit sky, Pee-wee and Darcie talked, discussing things they wanted to do. Darcie was talking about wanting to go out on a date sometime, when Pee-wee leaned in and gently pressed his lips to hers, sealing their reconnection in a passionate kiss.
Darcie's cheeks were flushed when they pulled away from each other. She opened her mouth to speak, but Pee-wee spoke before she could. "How about we stay out here for a while, just you and me? We can go look at the stars in my hammock…"
"I'd like that." Darcie smiled as Pee-wee took her hand and led her to the comfortable hammock.
They curled up together, unable to prevent themselves from blushing, being so close. Darcie looked up at the stars, staring at them for a while.
"Aren't they beautiful?" she asked, snuggling into Pee-wee.
"Yeah, they are. Do you want to see the most beautiful star?"
"Of course."
Pee-wee handed Darcie a small mirror. "The most beautiful star is you."
