Basil of Baker Street: Fic: Lost in the Snow

Title: Lost in the Snow
Fandom: Basil of Baker Street (or The Great Mouse Detective)
Rating: G
Length: 267
Summary: Basil and Dawson find some shelter in a snow storm.

“I think we need to face facts, Basil,” I said wearily. “We are lost.”

He sighed heavily, looking around at what could be seen of our surroundings through the swirling snow. “You are right, Dawson. We must find some shelter until the snow eases off.”

I agreed, knowing it would not take long for hypothermia to set in out here if we remained stationary. Grasping each other’s paws, we moved forward in search of some protection from the elements. At last, we came upon a hollow tree.

“In there, Basil,” I cried. “That will be ideal.”

We hurried over to the tree and scrambled up into the hole. It did indeed protect us from both the falling snow and the swirling wind. I felt instantly warmer simply from being out of the chilling blast. The bottom of the hole was coated with dry leaves, which would provide us with a makeshift blanket.

“Come along,” I urged Basil. “Cover up with the leaves.”

He was shivering, his thin frame being susceptible to the cold. He gratefully covered himself with leaves, as did I. I then reached for the little bundle on my back, from which I extracted some nuts I had come across while we walked.

“Eat something,” I said to him. “You’ll feel better.”

He grumbled but assented on the grounds of my medical knowledge. After we had eaten, we curled up around each other beneath the leaves, sharing our body heat.

“How do you feel now?” I asked him sleepily.

“Much better,” he replied. “Thank you.”

We nuzzled each other affectionately before settling down to sleep.
