He watched them from afar as they laughed and joked with each other. He had known from the first moment he laid eyes on them that these boys were destined to be his brothers' vessels, and Gabriel couldn't deny that they were a good fit in their personalities for Michael and Lucifer, but these two had a lightness to their hearts that Gabriel hadn't known in millennia. It was like seeing Mikey and Luci back when the universe was young, before Dad went and created humanity and caused the rift that pulled their family apart.

Gabriel was jealous, pure and simple. But he liked these boys. He really did. Even after they staked him. And he didn't want the world to end - he didn't want these boys to get caught up in all that. So he resolved to keep an eye on them, and to try and guide them away from starting the Apocalypse.

And if that was a little selfish, who would know?
