All the times Buffy had seen Angel, all the times he’d spoken with her, how had she not noticed, how had she not realised? He’d seemed to be on her side, had given her a silver cross, had warned her about various dangers, had even battled the Three alongside her, and been injured saving her life. Had it all been a trick to win her trust?

That was hard to believe. He’d had countless opportunities to kill her, if that had been what he’d wanted. He’d even spent the night sleeping beside her bed, and he’d done nothing, and yet…

She should have noticed something, should have realised when he was kissing her… The coolness of his skin should have alerted her, the lack of a heartbeat should have been obvious, the fact that he had no reflection in night-darkened windows… How had she overlooked that?

He was so handsome, the face of an angel, with the name to match, and yet, he was a demon, a vampire, and despite all her training and her Slayer senses, she’d been completely unaware until she’d seen his face transform. The heavy brow, the yellow eyes, the sharp fangs designed for biting into people to drink their blood.

She’d been falling in love with someone she’d thought was just an older boy with some insider knowledge on the forces of evil and the dangers she needed to look out for. Some kind of student of the occult, perhaps. Well, he had insider knowledge alright, because he was one of them, and she’d let him into her home.

But if he was truly evil, why did he keep warning her? Why had he fought alongside her? Why had he wanted so badly to kiss her? None of it made any sense! If Angel was a vampire, they should be mortal enemies, not sort of friends with feelings for each other, because despite everything, Buffy couldn’t shut her feelings off.

On the other hand, she couldn’t deny what she’d seen, the way his face had changed; that hadn’t been some trick of the light, it had been all too real. He’d even growled at her before diving out the window. Buffy didn’t think she’d ever been more confused, not even the day Merrick had told her about vampires and how it was her job to fight them.

Could a vampire ever be a good person?

The End
