Summary: Hicks finds out a different way about Rocker and Molly.

Donovan Rocker hesitated outside of Hicks' door. He had filed everything with HR, but he felt like he needed to tell Hicks personally, given the contentious nature of Val leaving him, literally leaving him with a man that she had been cheating on him with. The divorce was as final as it could be, given the way it worked in California.
There were other things he should have told him as well, but he wanted that to come from Molly herself. The divorce had taken everything out of him, and the quiet relationship he had started with Molly in the wake of the divorce starting and building himself back up was everything to him. Molly wanted to handle her father herself. Donny wasn't one to fight what his partner wanted, and he wasn't going to start it now.
Hondo walked by and knocked on the door, flashing a grin at Donny as he did so.
"You are welcome, Rocker," Hondo said.
Donny huffed, and he went inside when Hicks called for him to enter.
"I wanted to give you an update on my personal life, Sir. I've finished everything with HR, but I know that the files are not checked." Donny handed over a sheet of paper that contained everything Hicks would need to know in the event of a job-related injury. He wanted to put Molly, but that had to wait until after Molly told her father that they were dating.
"Divorce?" Hicks asked.
"We have everything squared away, and I've finally gotten the last of my things out of the house we had together. Since I entered the relationship with the house and made most of the payments on the bills, I am receiving four-fifths of the money from it when it sells. We are currently still working on getting the last things out to make sure that we have what we want."
"Sit," Hicks said. He looked at the papers, and he looked at Donny. "You never told me that you were even getting a divorce."
"Most of my team doesn't even know, Sir, much less anyone else here. I wasn't in a good place to talk about it for a while. I loved her, but she broke my heart, and it took a while to get over it."
"Tell me," Hicks said.
Donny debated telling him to mind his own business. He could see the look on Hicks' face, though. The man didn't think much of him when it came to him personally. It was something that had made him hesitant about Molly. Molly had been the one to tell him that she was going to make her own decisions, and no one else was going to factor into it.
"I came home, and she had packed a few bags and left a note along with the first set of divorce papers. I didn't sign those. She was trying to take a good chunk of the assets that are mine. I don't mind making sure that she's not destitute on the street, but I will not let her take more than her fair share when she can work. She worked a job she really liked, even though it didn't pay much at all, because I had more than enough to support us."
"She just left you?"
"She went on a three-week vacation with her boyfriend. She removed me from her social media, but a few people we have connected between us sent me screenshots of everything she posted so I could use them for the divorce. The courts don't look well on women who cheat on their husbands, especially cops and armed forces, instead of just breaking things off when the other relationship started."
"What was the reason for her cheating?"
Donny bristled, but they kept himself calm. "She stated that I wasn't around enough to build anything, actually, and that I would always choose my job over her. She hadn't once mentioned any of this at all before then. Not less hours. SWAT is a commitment, but I knew that if I came to you and said that my wife would like me to take less overtime because she wants to start a family, you would respect that."
"I would. The job requires commitment, but it also demands a commitment to family. I do try to strike a balance, but even then, you are only middle of the road in terms of hours worked."
"I do try to let those with kids and those who need overtime take it first. There are times when it's just not feasible with the hours they have already worked. Anyway, she started to see him four months before she asked for a divorce, and I came to find out that she had been seeing at least two other guys before that. She didn't want to leave me until she had made sure that she found the perfect man to move on with. This man does the kind of work that means he takes trips all over the world, and since he can bring her, she'll get a lot of trips out of it, lying on the beach while he does what works he does."
"I'm sorry for the end of your marriage; I know that things were strained talking about her around here after the whole thing with the letters and Cortez. Is that part of why you never brought it up?"
"No, I just didn't want to talk about my failings."
"Not failing on your part, outside of not noticing it."
"I knew something was going on, but I thought that she was afraid to finally mention that she was ready for kids, or she had decided that she didn't want them and didn't want to tell me yet. We had always planned on having them, Sir."
"You aren't getting any younger either. Okay, I'll make these changes to the notes that I keep on this to make it easier to know who to call when any of you are injured. Make sure that you update the rest of your team and give a heads-up to the leads from the other teams. The ones that you work with. Just on the change, you don't need to tell them everything unless you think that you should."
"I'll tell the rest of my team. We are just waiting for the process to be done. She dragged it out because she wanted to take as much as she could from me. The place where her new boyfriend works doesn't have a moral clause in their contracts; I have already checked. I was tempted to send a message about the cheating to them, but it wouldn't matter. I found that there were a lot of scandals like that around the people who worked there." Donny waited for Hicks to stand up before he did.
Hicks held out his hand, and Donny shook it. "Are you trying to date again?"
"I wasn't looking for it, but I did find a friend who decided that she wanted more out of me than friendship. From the first time that we had a meeting with a judge, and it was figured that out we were not ready for an amicable split of things, the judge told me that I would not be considered cheating since we are working through the divorce, especially since she had started this whole thing with a hidden relationship."
"Good. I'm glad you waited for that kind of judgment. I don't care personally, as soon as the papers were given over I pretty much would consider the relationship done, but I wouldn't want something to come up and one of those damned reporters to get it in their head that they could come after one of my guys for moving on after his wife was faithless."
Faithless. That was the word he had heard used a lot when it came to Val. He hadn't really thought much of it before he had heard it used for the first time.
"Anything else?" Hicks asked.
"No," Donny said.
"Then get the hell out of here, Rocker. If you need anything, find someone else to talk about."
Donny snorted, but he headed out. Hondo and Deacon were waiting outside of the doors, leaning on the walls opposite. Donny waited to see what they were going to say.
"We heard rumors, but since you had told pretty much no one, we kept it to ourselves, just pitched in and made sure that you had something to distract you at work when you were at your lowest," Deacon said.
"She cheated for months before asking for the divorce."
"Well, that sucks," Hondo said.
"It does."
Donny let them pull him into the kitchen.
"So that explains the girlfriend, then?" Deacon asked.
Donny looked at them, trying to figure out if they actually knew who he was dating. They didn't seem to.
"We've heard you talking about her to a few teammates. Of course, we said nothing because I heard one of them mention your divorce as well. So we let things be because there is no harm in moving on, and with what you said about her cheating before asking for a divorce, I can understand wanting to move on quickly."
"All of my love for Val died the day she did that. I was pissed off and so angry. I wanted to make her hurt. She was pissed off when I pointed out that I had a girlfriend at the last meeting we had. I kept her name out of it because it was immaterial to it all."
"Does she know everything?"
"We were friends first. We met at a spin class that I started attending because I didn't have the space for a home gym at my new place. I just took the first place with good security. I didn't want the house I had made a life with Val in. I took a six-month lease, and I reupped it not too long ago. I will be there for another six months, and that's fine. Getting out and being around people helped me not be as big of an asshole as I could be."
"That's good. If you need to talk, I'm here to listen. Annie would be willing as well."
"Nichelle, too," Hondo said.
Donny smiled at them because he appreciated the officer, and he was never going to take them up on it. He had his friends he could talk to, and his team knew a lot more. Still, it was a good thing. "Thanks. I'll let you know."
"So, the girlfriend, she a keeper?" Deacon asked.
Donny picked up his bottle of tea and sipped it before making a face. He looked down at it and realized that he had grabbed Molly's tea that morning. She liked the tea he made for himself, but he did not like this one. He would drink it for the caffeine, but he wasn't sure if he would like it.
"What's with that face? It go bad?" Hondo asked.
"No, no. It's fine. I just grabbed her tea, and I don't really like it. At least she likes the stuff that I make for myself. So, we have that stupid auction coming up. You both signed up?"
"We did. Most of the teams in SWAT did, as far as I understand. We have a large signup. They might have to make the rounds quicker."
Donny laughed. It seemed like they were going to raise a lot of money for victims of violent crimes. He was always willing to put himself up there for it. He had done it before, and Val had always acted so jealous. Now, he wondered if she was afraid he was going to cheat. He knew that projection was a big thing, and he could see her projecting like that. He wasn't sure what was going to come of the night, but he was looking forward to seeing what happened.
---
Molly knew she looked stunning in the tight red dress she was wearing. Red was the color that Donny loved on her. She would gladly wear whatever he loved when they were going to be seen. She didn't care about what other people thought.
"Are you sure you should be wearing that?" Her father asked as he stepped up to her.
Molly turned to see that he had a glass of wine in each hand. She took the white and sipped it before humming and looking out at the crowd of people, who were examining the books on the tables with the dates listed for each of the victims of the auction. To save time, since there were many of them, all the information provided before the auction for each person started was in the book, and people needed to review it to ensure they were voting for whom they wanted. Mostly it was going to be looks, but there were times where the hottest one to someone was paired with a date that the bidder hated.
Donny's date was so bland, an afternoon picnic with a movie to follow at the small drive-in. It was the kind of date that screamed that they could be friends. Since most of the people there were nearing retirement age, there was little chance of a love match.
"I am wearing what I like to feel good, Dad," Molly said.
Dad raised his hands, and he backed off. Molly looked around the room again. There were a few SWAT officers around the edges on duty. There were two teams that had been in last year's auction and had bid not to be auctioned off this year, so they had to work just to be safe. One of them was here in fancy dress as added security, and the other was back at HQ. This team could be pulled at a moment's notice with the rest of the officers that was on action stepping up to cover if shit started to go down.
"You aren't going to bid on any of my men, are you?" Dad asked.
"I guess you'll have to find out, huh? Does it really matter if I do? Most of them are married, and you would never allow a cheater to stay in our ranks. Do you think that they could do something to me and live through what I would do to them, much less you and the rest of their team?"
Dad shook his head, giving a dark laugh before his name was called out by someone on the far side of the place, and he looked at Molly one last time before heading over to where he was being called to. She was more than happy to be alone. The men and women being auctioned off were starting to come out to mingle with everyone. Molly moved over to the side, and she sipped her wine as she saw all of the team leads coming out together. Hondo looked dashing in the tux that he had picked out, while Donny was wearing a pale pink tux. It was widely out of place in there or would be if more of the people coming out weren't in other colors besides black and white. It seemed that there was a consensus about wearing non-standard tuxes. Molly loved it.
Molly hadn't shown Donny what she was wearing, and he had kept his attire from her as well. Molly snapped a picture of him for her own fantasies. She would gladly show off that to him and tell him about how much she wanted to see him on his knees. She looked around for her table and found where she would be seated with her father and then settled at it. She set her glass down where it would be in her sight, and she could make sure that no one put anything in it, and then she started to type out her fantasy of him under the hem of her dress and going to town on eating her out. She loved it when he did that, and he loved it. She sometimes ached from how big he was, so it was better when she was relaxed. He didn't mind making sure that she didn't hurt, and she was grateful for it when he really wanted to fuck her.
She knew the moment the message came over his watch because he looked at it and then looked around to find her. The promise in his eyes was more than enough to make her a little wet. They were not driving back to her place that night; they had an Uber scheduled, but there would be a grace period if, for some reason, the event ran longer than expected. It was a good feature for a night like tonight.
"Pink's an interesting choice," Annie said as she stepped up to Molly and sat down in the chair beside her.
"Rocker's always moved to his own rhythm. He's not alone. Did you see the pale yellow one?"
"And the neon yellow?"
Molly looked where Annie pointed, and she could see the patrol officer, who was wearing a stunning yellow dress. She was beautiful, and her skin tone complemented the yellow well. She was going to get a lot of bids.
"It's interesting to see people coming out of their shell for events like this," Molly said.
Annie laughed a little bit and took to looking around the room again. Since Deacon was up and making the rounds, it was best that his wife wasn't around him. She seemed more interested in sitting down and not talking to Molly than in anything else. So, Molly looked around the room again, keeping a weather eye on Donny. He was handsome as hell, and she was pretty sure that he was going to have a bruised ass when the older ladies were done pinching it to see how fit he was.
"You going to bid on anyone?"
"That would give my father a heart attack," Molly said.
"That's not a no," Annie said. She sipped her wine and stared at Molly.
"It's not, but I think I'll keep you in the dark on who I'm going to bid on."
Deacon appeared and held out his hand. "It's been requested that I show off my dancing skills since the date is dinner and dancing."
Annie slipped her hand into Deacon's and let him whisk her off.
"You looked like you were having fun with Annie," Dad said as he sat down.
Molly laughed, and she leaned into him when he scooted his chair closer to her. She watched Donny as he talked to a group of people. His hands moved as he talked; she didn't linger there long and kept her gaze moving around the room.
"I did have fun talking to her. She was sent to get information out of me, though, and I plan on making sure that no one knows what I'm going to do tonight."
"Not even me?"
"Especially you."
The meal was starting to be served ten minutes later. So, everyone headed for their seats. It was nice to see them settle into them, and the people on the auction were scattered around the room; Hondo was at their table, so Molly engaged him in conversation about what Nichelle was doing. Once the meal was mostly done, the auction started.
Molly kept her gaze on the stage, and she flipped through the book since no one else at her table was bidding on anyone. She would talk her father into getting up on that stage one of these years.
The team leads, no matter the division, were the last to go, so Donny was pretty late. It wasn't too bad in terms of time on each of the bids. Hondo was one of the quicker and more intense ones, while a few of the other leads were right at the end of each bid before the next came in.
Then it was Donny's turn. She shifted in her seat and looked at where her father was at the bar, getting something stronger than the wine that was still being passed around. She was happy about that. She waited for a few bids to go through, and then she raised her paddle. She hoped that her father wouldn't notice for a while.
One of the ladies dropped out, and it was just Molly and another woman who was at least less likely to be close to retirement. She would raise her hand before the next amount was fully out of the auctioneer's mouth, and when they were getting up pretty high, her father sat down beside her.
"Molly," Dad said, his voice low.
Molly ignored him and kept on going. The other lady was fading fast. Molly had set aside a substantial amount of money, and then Donny had given her more because she was the primary reason he was even doing this; he didn't want her to lose him.
"Going once, going twice, sold to Miss Hicks," the auctioneer said after a glance at het paddle in her hand that was still raised and the sheet in front of him.
"Molly," Donny said as he walked over to her and kissed her cheek before sitting down.
"Dad, I want you to meet my boyfriend. Donny, I'm sure you know him already."
"I do," Donny said, a cocky grin on his lips. "Sir."
"How long has this...what about your...It's always been you, hasn't it?" Dad asked.
"Yes, and I told him that he was not allowed to go behind my back and tell you that I would make sure you were told when I was ready. There is no reason to bluster over this. I'm doing what I want with my life. Not what you want. I met him at a spin class, and we had a conversation. We became friends, and then our relationship blossomed into something more as time went on. I helped him through his divorce and made sure that he was taking care of himself, and he did the same with hard cases for me."
"Molly," Dad said.
"I want him, and I'm not going to let him go because he's one of yours. He's not Street. He knows what he wants. He's settled into life and wants to be happy. He's chasing that happiness and making sure that he's good to go for life."
Dad sat back in his chair, and he looked at the two of them as the auction kept on going all around him. They were joined at the table by Tan with Hondo on his heels.
"I'm trying to figure out if you are asking for the pain or just have balls of steel," Hondo said as he looked at Donny.
"I'm doing nothing. This is all Molly's idea. I would have told him weeks ago if I had my way." Donny looked at her father, and then he wallowed. "Months."
"We had a near miss in the coffee shop. We arrived a little earlier than usual, and when we were in my car, Dad pulled in. If we had been on our normal time, we would have been inside there." Molly laid her hand on Donny's thigh as a man came around with the computer so she could transfer the money from her account over to the auction's account. She did it from her phone, but the account number was available for her to use. The man moved on when the money was being transferred. "We have a thousand left; that was the cap that I was willing to spend, so I'll transfer that back to you and you can use it on the date."
"You paid to have her bid for you?"
"No, I gave her extra money so that we could be sure that she was going to win me and not Gretchen. My ass would never recover because that woman has fingers that will damage you."
Tan rubbed his thigh, and he nodded. "She does make it hurt a lot. I'm just glad that she had her eyes on people after me, and I wasn't in her clothes this time."
"We will talk, Dad. I love and respect you, but you cannot control my life, and you had better not take it out on him. I'll make sure that you regret that."
Molly kept her gaze on her father after a few moments of it, and after a few moments of it, he nodded his head.
"Fine."
"We can have dinner soon. When he's getting to work, we order out, and he picks it up, but he cooks really well on the days that he has the time for it."
"Cooking is meant to be enjoyed, not endured," Donny said.
"I've never been that big into cooking," Dad said.
"We know," Molly said with a smile.
Hondo started talking to Donny about cooking, and they discussed a few things that Molly didn't care much about. She loved to cook, but she enjoyed doing it with someone, not just for the sake of it.
"You are lucky that he didn't blow up," Donny said.
"I have my father down to a science." Molly looked at her father with a grin on her lips, then she pressed a kiss to his cheek before looking at where the table was talking about things. She knew her father and bluntness was better than anything else.
