Spooks (MI5): Fanfic: Not Quite James Bond

Title: Not Quite James Bond
Fandom: Spooks (MI5) [werewolf!Lucas verse]
Rating: G
Length: 885 words
Summary: James Bond had Q for cutting edge science creations, Section D have Alaric Braithwaite

“Malcolm, so good to see you again. I’ve brought along the collar you wanted.” The man looked at Malcolm and then at his companion.

“Thank you, Alaric. This is my colleague Adam Carter. Adam this is Dr Alaric Braithwaite, who has installed the latest electronics into the collar,” Malcolm Wynn-Jones replied.

Adam nodded. “I’m delighted to meet you at last, Dr Braithwaite. I’ve heard so much about you.”

“I had rather assumed the dog would be here too,” Braithwaite replied.

“Unfortunately it wasn’t possible,” Adam said. “He was needed elsewhere.”

“And Mr North, I had understood he might be involved too.”

“No, I’m afraid he will be away at the time.”

“Your department does seem to have problems with staff availability.”

“I’m afraid, Alaric, there are rather a lot of demands on our time at the moment,” Malcolm said.

“Hmm, well we’d better get on.” He picked up the collar to demonstrate its properties. “It can easily be operated remotely. Of course, you will have to estimate when it will need to be switched on, but I’m sure the handler will be able to send a signal to whoever’s operating the system from your end. There will be a significant drain on the battery once it is operational, in order to provide the sophistication you have requested. This means that we can only guarantee full functionality for thirty minutes, and at most forty.”

“I understood that there was provision for it to be switched on by manipulating the collar,” Adam said.

“Yes, like this.” Braithwaite gave the collar two firm shakes, causing a bulb on the control panel to light up. “Very unlikely that the dog would do this accidentally.”

“And it can receive as well as transmit?” Malcolm asked.

“Yes, although why anyone would wish to send a message is beyond me. The handler should have their own means of communication.”

“Excellent. I think we’ve seen everything. Have you got any more questions, Adam?”

“No, we seem to have covered everything, thank you very much, Dr Braithwaite,” Adam replied. He picked up the collar, and he and Malcolm left the building.
---
A few days later, Adam placed the collar on the werewolf’s neck. The werewolf promptly shook his head and the light on the control panel came on.

Malcolm switched it off. “Do you have to?” he muttered.

The werewolf grinned at him.

“He’s getting cheekier than ever,” Malcolm said.

“I think he’s excited at wearing all this new tech,” Adam replied. “The rather worrying thing is that he was watching a Bond film of Tariq’s last night and seemed to be enjoying the times when Bond blew up Q’s latest invention.”

“Do not,” Malcolm looked firmly at the werewolf, “get any ideas!”

The werewolf wagged his tail.

Adam took the werewolf to Regent’s Park and let him go, saying, “You know what to do, and who you’re looking for. When you’ve finished leave the area. There’s a transmitter in your collar, so I can find you.”

The werewolf bounded off and into the park, before spotting someone who looked as if he was an official, and so headed for the bushes to hide.

Adam went to join Malcolm and Tariq, in a converted van. Nothing happened for a while, and Adam was starting to be concerned that their plan wasn’t working, when the light they were waiting for, came on.

“Do we reply?” Tariq asked.

“No, the talking seems very close, we don’t want to give him away,” Malcolm said.

The foreign voices had been speaking for almost half an hour when Adam said, “Something’s wrong. They sound agitated.”

There was more shouting, but the filtering system on the transmitter made it difficult to work out what was happening, so Adam said, “Switch the main transmitter off. We can use the subsidiary transmitter to local him.”

Tariq called up an electronic map and they watched the progress of the transmitter.

“That’s the lake,” Tariq said. “He’s going straight across it.”

“He could be in a boat,” Malcolm said.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Adam said. “He can’t row.” Then, when he realised that Malcolm and Tariq were staring at him, added, “He’ll have swum across. I’ll go and find him.”

“I’ll come with you,” Tariq said. “And leave Malcolm mourning the demise of yet another piece of kit.”

It didn’t take long for them to find the werewolf. A large, wet dog being chased by a park keeper, was rather obvious. Adam hustled him out of the park and back to the van, before instructing him firmly to shake before he got inside, rather than having him soak all their recording equipment.

Once inside the van, the werewolf presented Adam with a large, black flip flop.

“Why do I need this?” Adam asked.

In answer, the werewolf took the flip flop back and gave it to Malcolm, who prised the bottom off the sole.

“Oh, this is excellent,” he said. “We’ve been after one of these for ages. It works on similar technology to what’s in the collar, but to a higher spec.”

“And is the collar wrecked?” Adam asked.

“It shouldn’t be. It might not cope with being submerged in deep water, but if it can’t take getting wet, it won’t be much use for any operative, whatever form they may come in.”
