House of the Dragon: Fanfic: Weight
Title: Weight
Fandom: House of the Dragon
Characters: Alicent Hightower (Alicent/Rhaenyra or Alicent & Rhaenyra)
Prompt: 481: Charity
Rating: PG
Length: 200 words
Content warnings: Implications of incest. Some gaslighting, as is Alicent's way.
Author’s notes: Set somewhere in season 1 before the big time jump. You can read this as shippy or not.
Summary: Is it not Alicent’s duty to pray for Rhaenyra’s sins?
Alicent’s knees ache from the weight she carries. She shrugs despite the slim hands that push her shoulders down. Her crown crushes her even in its absence. She bows her head and presses her nose to her enclosed hands, her lips barely moving as she beseeches the gods to heed her prayers and forgive Rhaenyra for all her sins.
Isn’t that a mother’s duty?
It’s she who bears the burden of Rhaenyra’s transgressions, crippled by how heavy a toll her secrets are to carry. It’s she who has become the wilting flower in an otherwise blooming garden. It’s Alicent Hightower who suffers under the crushing weight of a dragon’s foot and belly and arms when she lays in the softest bed in the Seven Kingdoms. Not Rhaenyra. But it’s Rhaenyra she prays for.
The flames inside the sept flicker. Their warmth teases her cheeks like a mother’s caress. And isn’t that how she tends to her babe now? Her son, the heir, the dragon who will set the kingdom right, who has come from her womb unburdened despite the sins she carries for his half-sister.
For if Rhaenyra is to be forgiven, then surely there is hope for Alicent Hightower.
