Molly let herself into her apartment. She loved the place, but it was starting to feel too small. It wasn't Donny's fault, but it was. He was a big guy, but that wasn't the reason. No, the reason was that there wasn't enough space there for them to merge their lives together in any way at either place. They stayed at Molly's more than Donny's place because Donny's was pretty unlived in. He had worked so much, and then the rest of it had been spent outside of the place that he hadn't cared to do much about making the place its own after he left Val in the house when they started the process of separation.
Donny's backpack was sitting on the counter, and his gun safe was closed, where it was hidden on the far side of the room on the bookshelf. It wasn't the best spot for it, but it was the only one that worked. It wasn't really that hidden, but it wasn't like it was going to open if someone picked it up and dropped it. The ammo was hidden in a book beside it with a key lock on it, and the key was in the safe with the gun. It worked for them. Molly knew the code and could get in there since that was his backup piece that usually lived there. It was just big enough for it and his active piece.
Molly dropped her purse beside the backpack on the counter. She thought about changing things around so that he could leave his backpack by the door for ease of having a spot where it was all that would be there.
Molly knew that he had to be in the bedroom with no Donny in sight. A nap sounded wonderful. It was Friday night, and Donny wasn't on call, so they had the weekend. It was good to have some time together because he had been working his ass off over the week with a few things that had come up that needed help, and Donny was always there to help.
Molly went to the fridge to grab her water bottle and drank some of it. She looked around the place, where little bits of Donny were everywhere. They were exclusive, and she told her father she didn't know if they were serious or not, but she thought, at least, maybe, she had been lying to herself because this felt serious as hell. She knew that she wasn't a rebound relationship for him. Donny had been open from the start about how much Val's actions had killed any love he had for her. Cheating was something that Molly could never understand. She had never let the woman and hoped she never would.
Heading for the bedroom, she grabbed Donny's bottle of water from the stand beside the couch. Donny was flopped on the bed, taking up over half of it in the way that he was starfished. She pushed as she took off the shirt that he was wearing, and she could see the cut sleeves that dipped down his side, showing off bangles of some kind. She took in the way he was lying and realized that he had taken painkillers of some kind to be able to sleep. She debated texting her father.
Molly sat down on the edge of the bed and looked at her phone, surprised to find a message from her father already. He had sent it not too long before, and she hadn't noticed it. She turned her phone back to vibrate, forgetting that she hadn't done that when she had been in the car.
Dad: He went through a glass window when a suspect hit him with his car. He was fine. He checked out of the hospital before Deacon dropped him off at your place. He has muscle relaxers that were given to him by the hospital, but just over-the-counter pain meds, from what I've been told. His bandages will need to be changed before bed. If you can't get him awake, don't worry too much. He sleeps hard on muscle relaxers. It made for some fun pranks when he stayed here after an accident.
Molly smiled, and she wondered if her father ever would have done this with Jim if she had asked him about it more. She had only asked once when there had been an accident, and the news said that a SWAT officer had been rushed to the ER while bleeding. She hadn't seen Donny on the news, so she had worried. After that, her father tried to help settle her nerves, just like his partner used to do for her mother when he was hurt at work. It was a good thing, and maybe she should put out a feeler with Donny about having one of his team doing it for her instead of her father, but if her father wanted to keep on doing it, she wasn't going to take that from him.
Getting up, Molly headed to the bathroom to get ready for her nap. She needed to get her makeup off her face.
When she was done in the bathroom, Donny was still on the bed, his face buried in the pillow that was hers now. His body was still lax with sleep, even though he had moved. Molly sat on the edge of the bed, and she touched his lower back, where his shirt had ridden up. She could see the white with a little blood all over his back. It looked like he hadn't been wearing his vest.
"I'm okay," Donny said.
"That's what my father said. I just wanted to see what you looked like. You took off your vest?"
"The straps were cut when I was fighting the UnSub before the other hit me with their car. Then we fought on the glass. It wasn't good, but I won in the end. Seventeen switches in my back. They probably need to be cleaned. I should get up and do that."
"I'll get it. What about your front?"
"Nah, I'm fine except for the small cuts on my face. A few on my arms, but mostly it was my back."
"Hence, you are starfished on the bed. Don't move, and I'll get the supplies you brought with you a few weeks ago."
"Hmm, the stuff for infection that they sent me home with is in my backpack. One of those white bags."
Molly leaned over and kissed his cheek before she got up and headed out to get what he had talked about. She found the cleaning supplies for the wounds and the instructions. She smiled at the directions because she knew he would have heard it all and thrown away the instructions, but he left them for her. She read them over and the care instructions for the stitches once he was a little more healed up. She laid those on the counter and carried the rest to the bedroom.
Donny had moved, only to get his shirt off. The trash can was closer to the bed as well to allow her to put the gauze and tape in there, along with what was used to clean up the wounds. The little baggies with enough for both were kind of cute. She wondered if it was something a nurse did there for the SWAT guys to make them more willing to take care of themselves or if it was something that Donny did. She would have to see which it was with time.
She looked forward to figuring out every little thing with him over the next few years. She wasn't getting younger; if she wanted kids, she needed to do it soon. That was something to talk to Donny about.
"After this, I want to nap, so you are going to have to give me some space."
"I'll give you whatever space you want," Donny said.
Molly smiled, and she carefully started to peel off the tape. She frowned at the way that the gauze covered up the bruises that were horrible on his back. Now she understood the cream that was for pain relief, along with the pills for keeping his body from seizing up on him. She laid it all on the bed, and then, when she had all the gauze and tape off his body, she stood up to wash her hands. She had helped her father with a few things over the years; she knew how to care for wounds. There was something calming about doing it when the wounds weren't life-threatening. She picked up a rag from the cabinet on her way out the door, making sure that when she cleaned the wounds, she could at least dry the skin around them by dabbing it all around. She had gauze to dry the wounds better before putting the cream on them.
Donny was where she had left him; only his eyes were closed this time as if he had dropped off again. However, as soon as her foot scuffed on the carpet, his eyes opened wide. He looked fully awake. He smiled at her and then closed his eyes. He gripped the edge of the bed when she sat down again, getting ready for what was to come.
Molly worked methodically as she cleaned each one before she started to dress them again. It gave the skin time to dry off a little bit before she put the new gauze on his skin. He hissed only a few times, and his stitches looked like they were still angry at being done. It didn't seem like infection was setting in, just the angry, swollen skin from the injury.
"You really did a number on your back," Molly said.
"Hmm, I did. Never fought on glass like that before, not without a vest on, but the way it was, it was dangerous to keep it on me. That would have ended in a lot more injuries. They can't even fix it, so they have to get me a new one."
"Donny," Molly said.
Donny opened his eyes and tipped his head to where he could look at Molly. "I'm fine. I didn't have my phone as it was back in Black Betty, so I wasn't able to text you. I then kind of forgot because of the pain medication that they gave me at the hospital and then the muscle relaxers for the way home."
"It's fine. I didn't even know that anything had gone down today."
"Yeah, dumbasses attacked a group of firefighters because they were helping people at a car accident. LAFD responded with more firefighters, but we were sent after the suspects who fled the scene. I caught one of them, and the fight started. Then the other, who had been going to get their getaway vehicle, decided it was best to hit me. Nearly took out his friend. We got them, and things were fine."
"I love you," Molly said.
Donny moved to where he was on his side, his face a picture of surprise. She wasn't used to seeing that kind of look on his face, especially directed at her. He usually did better at hiding when he was surprised, but she blamed the suddenness of his words.
"I love you, too," Donny said.
"You aren't saying that because you think I need to hear it when it's not true, right?" Molly asked.
"I'm not."
"And it's not because of the drugs you are on?"
"No, it's not. I felt it for a few days. Well, I realized it the other day when I heard Deacon talking about Annie with one of the other SWAT guys who wasn't sure whether he loved his boyfriend or not. I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but I still ended up doing it anyway, and I thought when Deacon was done talking, it was you. That was what I felt for you. I was different than what I felt for Val, but my love for her was very young. Sorry, I didn't mean to bring her up."
"No, it's fine. You only do it to highlight that she and I are different. I want to make sure that I know you aren't comparing us in that way. I get it. I've talked about other boyfriends before and how you do things differently, which I like. I just have more previous lovers than you do. Thankfully, none of them are in our lives."
Donny snorted, shifted a little, and sighed as his body went a little more lax, as if he were falling asleep again. "Wanna hold you."
"Okay, let me get this all cleaned up, and then we can cuddle and nap. You want to stay on your side?"
The subtle nod was more than enough for Molly. She picked up her trash and threw it away before washing her hands again. She took her time and looked at herself in the mirror. She had no makeup on, and she liked it. She didn't wear a lot for work unless it was a court day. She dried her hands and turned to the side, looking at her belly in the mirror. Holding out her hand like she would if she were pregnant. She knew that Donovan was more worried about marriage and getting their lives apart if something happened. Val's marriage to him had made him scared. She wondered if that meant he would refuse to have kids with her without a ring on her finger. Without their names being the same.
She wanted a kid, and it was something that had unlocked inside of her with Donny. She wanted to see what he was like with a kid. She knew what he was like with his team members' kids. How much they loved him and how he was with them all. The squad had welcomed her with open arms despite who her father was. It was easily something that she could find herself settling into, being one of the team spouses.
"You fall in?" Donny called out.
Molly dropped her hand and looked at her watch. She had been staring at herself in the mirror for way too long. Enough that Donny had noticed her being gone, even though he was still pretty drugged up from the medications he had been given.
Heading back into the room, she found that Donny looked to be getting up. "I'm fine. Lay back down."
"What's got you so pensive that you were staring at yourself in the mirror?"
"You saw that?" Molly asked.
"I got a glance when I was getting up." Donny lay back down on his side and carefully rolled to his front to get the blankets out from under him. He winced just once. When he held the blankets for her to get under, she lay down, putting her back to his front. Letting the shelter of his arms make her feel better. There was nothing to do but lie there for a few minutes and let her think about how she didn't want to sleep away from him.
"I think we went from not sure what this is to too serious very quickly," Molly said.
"Why do you say that?"
"Because I'm sitting here thinking about what a baby of ours would like and how much I want a baby with you."
"Do you need a ring on that finger to want to have a baby with me?"
Molly laughed, and then she felt the tears on her cheeks. "No, I don't need a ring on my finger or even a ring promise."
"The only stipulation is that we find a place before we try because I cannot stay here with a baby as much as I love your place. I want a house. And when I say try, I mean actively trying. We can forgo condoms, and you can go off birth control, and we can see where it goes from there." Donny kissed the side of her neck. "No, wait, I have two stipulations."
"I was already going to be the one to tell my father because he's mine to handle. I do not want you to ask his permission for anything as your boss. I want you to ask my father. I know that it's a little blurred, but I'll make sure that he knows that any kind of work retaliation will not be liked by me at all. I'm a grown woman who can do what she wants."
"And you want me?"
Molly took the arm that he had around her, and she laid his hand over her belly. She smiled when his hand curled possessively over her skin. "I do."
"Okay, then we can start to plan for the future."
"I should take my birth control in a few hours, but I'll turn off that alarm. I always took it at night since it was when I was sure I wouldn't be busy. So, we can start that sort of not trying tonight if you want."
"After we nap," Donny said. His voice was husky as if he was mostly asleep. "Right like this. I can have you like this."
Molly laughed because this was Donny's favorite position for sex. She loved it, too, and was more than ready for it after they woke up to start the next phase of their relationship.
