"So, I have to warn you," Tommy said as he opened up the door to his house. "Dragon hates everyone but me."

Buck had heard Eddie saying something about a demon a day ago. He had still been pouting a little about Eddie knowing Tommy better than him, but he was getting to where he knew him well. They had talked a lot over text, even though there wasn't a lot of time to go on dates, even ones that Buck didn't call a date before the wedding.

After the party had wound down in Chim's room, Buck had offered to drive Tommy back to the station to turn in his gear and get his stuff before taking him home. He said something about his neighbor taking him to work on his next working day so he could just leave his truck at the station.

"Eddie likened him to a demon."

"Well, I do call him the demonic Dragon sometimes when I introduce him to people. He'll bark and growl, but he won't bite unless you go to touch him. Just don't do that, and things will be fine. Don't hold your hand out; just let him sniff your legs."

"Who takes care of him when you are on shift?" Buck asked. He followed Tommy into the house and shut the door behind him.

Tommy was exhausted, and he had to take care of Dragon.

"Jake. He comes over and unlocks the flap for Dragon to use to get in and out when he wakes up for the day if he's still asleep when I go to work. He will also take him home if I'm called out, and it's wildfire duty. Dragon will get into his lap, but Jake can't touch him."

Buck wanted to know what happened to the dog to make him like that when the sound of something thumping down the stairs drew his attention to the side. He saw it was a Chihuahua. So, there was probably nothing that had happened to the dog to make him that way; he was just that way. Buck stayed where he was when Dragon got him in his sights. There was a way the dog looked at him like he was going to get torn apart if he ever breathed in his direction.

The only plus side was that it seemed that the dog hated everyone, so it wasn't like if Dragon hated him, Tommy would put an end to this. He just had to make do. It wasn't like Buck hadn't dealt with pissed-off or mean dogs before. He had come across them a lot in his line of work. He had tackled a lot of scared animals who had already been burned or had been trapped and knew their end was near if they weren't able to get out, but they didn't see him in his gear as someone who was there to get them out of there.

Buck breathed, and it was like Dragon had been set off. The dog started to vibrate in place, and his hackles rose, his growl getting big enough that it sounded like it was coming from an animal at least three times his size. Then, the barking started.

"Just don't back down, or he'll keep on. Don't let him think you have scared him." Tommy tugged Buck along with him into the house.

Tommy had showered at the station; there was a heavy-duty cleaner that helped with the smell of smoke. So, they were just waiting for the pizza that Tommy had ordered for their dinner and then bedtime. Buck still wasn't sure that he should be there for the bed part of things. It was moving a little faster than he was sure that they should, but Tommy said that after his day and even Buck's day, maybe they shouldn't be alone. The guest room was on offer, and there was no pressure to use it or to share Tommy's bed.

Buck wasn't afraid of sleeping in the same bed as Tommy. Despite the kiss with Tommy being his first, he had done a lot of looking into things. Maybe not as deep of a dive as he normally would do into things because he liked learning some stuff from Tommy.

With only a glance at the dog, Buck followed Tommy to the living room, where Tommy dropped onto the couch and looked like he would pass out in a few seconds if he was left alone.

"Should I pinch you?" Buck asked.

Tommy held out his hand, and Buck let Tommy pull him in close, tucking him into his side. He took off his shoes so he could tuck his feet up onto the couch.

"No, no pinching, please. Just shake me. The pizza place is used to me being dead on my feet. There are fives in the drawer next to the door. I give them one of those. Or two if I order a lot. Sometimes, I'll get days' worth of food from them at a time."

Tommy looked at Buck like he wanted something from him, but Buck couldn't read what that was.

"Kiss?" Tommy asked.

"There is less soot this time," Buck said, but he leaned in. The kiss was nothing like what their first or second had been. This was something more real and honest. Tommy was exhausted, and Buck was as well, from a night of drunken shenanigans to running around all day to find Chim; Buck was finding that now that he was at Tommy's, he felt like he was going to pass out with Tommy.

The kiss ended when Tommy yawned. Buck settled back to where he was curled into Tommy.

Dragon jumped over into Tommy's lap. Buck hadn't even seen where he had gotten up on the couch from.

"There is a set of stairs behind the couch that wraps around to allow him up onto the arms on either side. Then, he uses the tables to get to the chairs if he wants to sit on them. I have a lot of stuff around the house to help him get up on things since he can't always jump up due to his size, especially when he gets older."

"That's good that you thought about that. He's not going to lunge and bite me, is he?"

"No, just don't put a body part in my lap. He's learned I don't allow him to get people away from me. He still tries, but as long as you don't show fear. He also knows that aggression will get him thrown out of my bedroom. So you don't need to worry about that."

Buck hadn't even thought about that. The idea that Dragon would attack him while he slept. He trusted that Tommy knew his dog and that Tommy would never keep a dog that would hurt someone.

It took a while for Buck to settle again, but he did just as the doorbell went off for the food being delivered. There was a shuffle as Tommy got up and put Dragon down in his spot while Buck was left in a stare-off with the dog. He wasn't sure how this was going to go, but he needed to at least attempt to let the dog sniff him and get used to him. He wasn't going to let a dog run him off.

---

Buck woke up, and he wasn't sure what was going on. He felt hungover, worse than he had been when he had woken up on the floor of Chim's hotel room. The world felt horrible, and it took a few seconds for his brain to engage in why he felt like that. Then it hit him, and he started to cry again. Bobby was dead. They had all stayed until the body had come out, and then there was the Army and the FBI getting everyone out of there. It had sucked.

Tommy had taken him home, and he was in Tommy's bed right now. Tommy wasn't in it, and Buck wasn't sure where he was. He looked at where the clock was on the side of the bed and stopped when he realized that there was something leaning against his chest. He started to move and stopped. He was in Tommy's bed, and Dragon was right there in front of him. He didn't move at all because he knew what Dragon was like when Buck rolled into his space.

The soft sounds of Tommy coming toward him were good. He really wanted to have Dragon out of the bed so he could move. Dragon had never bitten him, but Buck hated upsetting him. At the end of the relationship, they could coexist without Dragon growling at him all the time. The only time was when they were alone, and Dragon didn't want company.

Tommy came into the room, and the growling started. Tommy had a tray of food in his hands. He looked at Dragon with such a fond look.

"Oh, hush you," Tommy said before sitting the tray down on the bed.

The growling got worse, and Dragon jumped up. Buck rolled a little to try to get away from Dragon to help him calm down.

Only when Tommy reached out and Dragon backed into Buck's chest like he was protecting him did he realize that Dragon was growling at Tommy.

Tommy realized it at the same time. He pulled his hand back and looked at Buck in shock.

"What is going on?" Buck asked. He rolled to his back because he was sore as hell from crying. He was sore from everything.

"I think that Dragon is trying to protect you," Tommy said. He smiled, but it was not a happy one. "He was weird all night when you were trying to sleep, and when I woke up this morning, I saw him leaning into you, but I didn't think anything of it. He was like that at the end, curling into you when you were sleeping but being away from you when awake. I'll leave the food here and go back to get the coffee." Tommy looked like he wanted to kiss Buck, but he didn't, and the light growl from Dragon stopped him from doing it.

"I didn't hit my head, right?"

"No, you didn't hit your head." Tommy reached out to touch, and Dragon allowed that, for now, at least. "I see why my last date was really put off by Dragon. I think he might try to kill me if I tried to get fresh with you. Though there is no getting fresh with anyone at the moment. What do you need?"

"Beyond what I know can't happen?"

Buck didn't want to say it, but the look that came over Tommy said all that he needed to know about it. Tommy knew what he meant.

"This. Just us, even with the demon dog."

"Right after we broke up, he went through a weird phase. I wasn't sure what it was, and I didn't chalk it up to anything, but he might have missed you. I think you tamed him."

"I doubt it. He probably smells the sad pheromones I'm putting out and is confused about them. That's all."

Tommy gave him a look that said that he was an idiot. Buck felt like an idiot. He felt like he had done something wrong, even though he had done everything right. There was no chance of having a second dose, and it would have taken too long to make another, even with the first dose. They would have lost both Chim and Bobby.

There was no way that Buck could have done a damned thing, but he felt like he had let everyone down.

Buck wanted to be held; that was what he wanted, and he looked at Tommy. He didn't have to say a single thing. Tommy moved the tray around and climbed onto the bed with Buck, wrapping his arms around him and holding him tightly. Dragon crawled into his lap, and he thought that maybe this could be enough for him for the next little while. He had to be strong for everyone. They would need him, but with Tommy, maybe he could break down. Maybe he could be vulnerable and show Tommy that he needed him as much as Tommy needed Buck.

Maybe out of a disaster, they could build something that was like what Bobby and Athena had, the love that would make them want to live.
