Buffy stood in her basement, her eyes trained on the vampire before her.
There was a look of vulnerability on his face that he would never show around other people. They were worlds apart, natural enemies, yet they both tended to let down their defenses in the presence of one another.
“Why do we keep pretending like it doesn’t hurt when we’re apart?” she asked, her voice barely audible.
He stepped closer, his hand clutching the amulet he’d been examining. “Because it’s easier than facing the truth.”
Buffy closed the distance, surprising Spike with a kiss heavy with unspoken words.
