Summary: Slack and Lake are in St Mary Mead, so they'd better speak to Miss Marple
“You’re looking thoughtful, sir,” Sergeant Lake said. “Is everything all right?”
“This is St Mary Mead,” Inspector Slack replied. “So I suppose we ought to consult the witch while we’re here.”
“I don’t think you should call her that.”
“Well, I wouldn’t call her that to her face,” Slack said with a shudder.
“How do you know she can’t just sense your thoughts?” Lake asked him.
Slack glared at his sergeant and the two of them made their way to Miss Marple’s cottage.
She welcomed them inside and said, “What a lovely surprise. To what do I owe the pleasure of your company?”
“Mr Kingscott has reported the disappearance of his wife. We wondered if you could tell us when you last saw her,” Slack said.
“That would have been when she was leaving church on Sunday. She goes to the nine o’clock service, while I generally go to the one at half past ten. Which means we pass each other in the street.”
“And you’ve not seen her since?”
“No, the Kingscotts have kept themselves to themselves since coming to the village. When did she disappear?”
“Apparently she caught the bus into Much Benham yesterday morning and hasn’t been seen since.”
Miss Marple tutted.
“You don’t sound sure of this,” Slack said.
“It does seem a bit strange. Dolly and I walked past their house on Wednesday, so two days ago. I noticed the plants on her windowsill were all drooping, so I assumed the Kingscotts were away. But even if they had been away, as soon as they got home, Mrs Kingscott would have seen how thirsty the plants were and watered them. No, she disappeared much earlier in the week."
Slack frowned. “Right. We’d better go and have another word with Kingscott. Come along, Lake. Thank you very much for your assistance, Miss Marple.”
“I’m always happy to help, Inspector. Do drop by again.”
Slack smiled and hustled his sergeant out.
