Summary: There is a persistent noise in the Lair, and they all split up to hunt down the source.
There was something dripping in the Lair.
The problem with living in the sewers was the echoes. Footsteps, the clash of metal-on-metal, whispers, they all bounced around the stone walls until they warped, growing deeper and stranger. No wonder April told them there were all sorts of rumors that the sewers were haunted.
It wasn’t spooky to them - it was just how home sounded - but it could be frustrating.
One got used to it, after a while, with the most familiar sounds. Because the more you heard it, the more you could tell from the echoes how loud it was, the direction from how many times it generally bounced off the walls – all four of the other residents could instinctively pinpoint where Mikey was giggling from, half a Lair away – but for less frequent sounds, or ones that had a lot of variety, it was a lot harder to pinpoint the source.
Case in point…
Drip.
“I vote we just move out,” Raph proposed, clipping his words the way he did when he was very incredibly pissed.
“Hear, hear,” Mikey agreed solemnly. “All in favor of moving to somewhere where the sounds aren’t trying to eat our brains-”
Leo turned to look at the both of them from where he’d been poking his head in all the rooms on the second floor. “Are you guys seriously proposing we find a new home every time the current one springs a leak?”
Drip.
“Pssh! No.” After a second of thought, though, Mikey tilted his head, tapping a finger to his chin. “Maybe.”
Donny ducked though the utilities room doorway, decked out in a utility belt, wiping his hands off on a garage towel. Master Splinter followed behind, carrying a bag. “I just checked our direct hookup job to city water, and everything there appears to be in order, though I did tighten a few fittings just in case.”
Drip.
Donny winced. “...although apparently our issue is still ongoing. Leo, you for sure checked all of the ceiling lines?”
“Everything up here seems secure, Don.”
“Mikey, all the water lines in the bathrooms and kitchen?”
“Everything’s shipshape, cap’n!”
“Raph, the garage and everything just outside the Lair?”
“Yeah, an’ I found zip! Everything’s fine. Cold water line’s got some condensation, but not enough to-”
Drip.
Raph and Mikey groaned in sync. Even Leo winced.
“I’ll have to check back on the cold water line later. It shouldn’t be condensating, but there are other things higher up on the priority list at the moment. I… guess we should start following the lines one by one from the main until we find it?” Donny said, sounding just a bit tired.
Drip.
“You heard the turtle. Everyone over there,” Leo motioned towards the utility room with a sigh.
Raph and Mikey continued to banter as they made their way over.
“I heard the sewers uptown have golden toilets!”
“Yeah, well, downtown’s where all the dirtbags like to hang out. Think of the convenience! We pop out an’ we got a bad guy buffet all neatly laid out for us.”
“Heated floors, though. Can’t beat that.”
“Subway’s a lot more accessible underneath downtown.”
Drip.
“Hmmm. Good point, good point.”
They both flinched as something whacked them upside the head. They turned to find Master Splinter lowering his walking stick, looking stern and the slightest touch amused. “We will not be abandoning this home until circumstances beyond our ability to handle take it from us. And no, that does not include a small noise.”
Drip.
Master Splinter, too, winced. His ears flicked backwards just the tiniest smidge.
“Master Splinter, can you get everyone started? I’m just going to wash my hands really quick,” Donny said, waving his palms.
They’d only just begun to trace the first waterline from out of the closet and towards the first intersected joint, when-
“Hey, you know what I haven’t heard in the past few seconds?” Raph asked suddenly.
Leo turned to look out across the lair. “You’re right…”
Donny leaned out of the doorway to the downstairs bathroom with folded arms. “Mikey, please tell me, step by step, exactly how you checked all of your assigned locations for leaks.”
Mikey perked up, seemingly unaware of the shark lurking under the still waters of the situation. “Oh! That was easy! I started with the bathroom near my room, checked the faucet, looked in the cupboards under the sink, found that Gameboy under there that I’d been hiding from Raph! Played some Mario as I was headed downstairs, then pet Klunk for a bit because she was looking lonely, then went into the kitchen, then I turned on the faucet, turned it back off. No drips there, so I started opening up the cupboards to see the water lines, realized we had a couple of cereal boxes that were really close to expiring, so I did us all a favor and had some Cereal Extravaganza by mixing ‘em all together, then as soon as I was done eating, Raph went, ‘I think we should move out,’ and I was like-”
“-So you didn’t check all of the faucets like I asked,” Donny concluded evenly. “Even though that was possibly the simplest job I could have given you.”
“…I’m realizing now that my answer to that should probably not be ‘yes’?”
Leo closed his eyes. “So the leak was…?”
“Faucet left slightly open,” Donny confirmed. “Downstairs bathroom.”
Raph turned to Mikey with intent to strangle in his glare.
Mike meeped. “Guess I might be moving uptown anyways, guys.”
