KHR: Fanfic: Ticket to freedom

Title: Ticket to freedom
Fandom: Katekyou Hitman Reborn (KHR)
Rating: PG
Length: 753
Content notes: N/A
Author notes: Do not ask me when this is happening, idk. But Skull is looking for a new home and Tsuna is conflicted.
Summary: Skull is lucky number 7. The last guardian to be chosen, and the only one who wasn't wanted. So it goes.

“So I’m lucky number 7 it turns out.”

“I don’t-“

Skull smiled, something rueful and vaguely bitter about it. “Don’t worry," he reassured.

“I’m very aware of the reason why you’re choosing me, and I’m very much aware that it wasn’t by choice. No need to feel guilty about it.”

Tsuna raised his head to meet his gaze directly. “I did have a choice! And I am choosing you!”

Such vehemence in that voice, and yet they both knew he was lying. Skull wasn’t an idiot. It had been very clear to all and sundry that the sky and his cloud had been courting each other, for all that they’d been unconventional about it. Hibari had always hovered at the periphery of Tsuna’s guardians. Part of the group, but very aloof despite it all. Participating when needed, yet his priority had and would always be something else. He could never be committed to the family in the way the mafia needed Vongola's cloud to be.

Skull had seen it coming. And as the only unattached cloud in their circle, he knew what was likely to happen. And he wasn’t even conflicted about it, really. For all that Tsuna and Hibari called to each other, due their peculiar dynamic, Skull was the ticket to Tsuna’s tranquility and peace of mind, just as Tsuna was Skull’s ticket to freedom from the shackles that bound him.

He took the ring, enclosing Tsuna’s hand in his own. “No need to lie, Tsuna. To me or to yourself.” He didn’t avoid the young man’s gaze, meeting it head on. “We both know you wouldn’t have chosen me if circumstances hadn’t pushed your hand.”

The ring felt comfortable on his finger despite the weight and significance of it. It felt like the beginning of a journey and the end of another, like a heavy step into a new world.

“And we both know why I’m lucky number 7, the last of your guardians to be chosen. Because I’m not the one you want, but I’m the only one who can currently fill that role for you.”

The boy took a deep breath, and Skull wondered if he should feel some guilt about breaking his illusions like that. It couldn’t be easy, knowing that there were no easy solutions and that either one you chose would be mercenary in some way. Especially when one was as averse to conflict as Sawada Tsunayoshi. He had to face it though, or he would smash his face against that wall sooner rather than later.

“You’re not just a stand-in, I don’t-“

He was looking for words, some way to articulate what he felt, and the frustration showed so obviously on his face. “I’m not manipulating you, you're not replacing- I’m not just-"

A wordless sound of rage with hands grasping at brown hair. "I don’t want to use you for my own benefit, it’s not right, and you deserve better, Skull, you do!”

Tsuna’s eyes were fiery, with a wetness that indicated a threat of unshed tears, and Skull… In that moment, Skull understood why every single one of the boys’ guardians was a little bit in love with him. It must make one feel giddy, having all of that loyalty, that resolve, directed at you, for you. Skull was having but a glimpse of it, more out of misplaced guilt than anything else and yet it made him want to follow.

He shook himself out of it, pasting instead a wry smile on his face.

“Sawada Tsunayoshi,” he sighed, staring at those determined eyes. “Shake off that guilt of yours and know that as much as you might be using me-”

He raised a finger to forestall the protests he knew were coming. “Let me finish. As much as you think you are using me for your own gains, I am also benefiting just as much from this arrangement.”

He stepped closer to make sure the weight of his words would be felt without him having to raise his voice. “Because you? You’re my ticket to freedom.”

He wouldn’t offer his heart to a sky again, wouldn’t expect to find a family, especially in the mafia. But Sawada Tsunayoshi kept his promises, and though Skull would never be part of his family, he could at least trust in that.

Tsuna could be trusted to be honest, and Skull would grasp his ticket and hop on this train to see where it brought him. Hopefully he might find a home on the way.
