Arabella picked up her fork and poked the little mound of mush on her plate. Catalina had called it a vegetable casserole. It was weird and lumpy but smelled pretty good. Not as good as the roast chicken sitting beside it, but it definitely smelled better than it looked.

“If you’re not gonna eat that, I’ll take it off your hands.” Leon reached across the table and Arabella gently swatted his hand away. Well, gently for her. “Mine,” she growled.

Grandma Frida pulled out her phone and started taking pictures. Arabella turned to see what was so photo-worthy and saw Catalina and Alessandro being disgustingly sweet and adorable again. Gross. Arabella rolled her eyes. She was glad her sister was happy and all, but did she have to be so happy in front of everyone? And at the dinner table? She was trying to eat!

Mom recited her usual mantra of “no phones at the table.”

Grandma Frida snapped another picture. “It’s important to capture the precious moments, Penelope. You of all people know how damn fleeting they can be.”

Mom shook her head and took another bite of her food.

“Way to be morbid, grandma.” Sadly, she wasn’t wrong.
