Women's Soccer RPF: Fanfiction: Sugar Skulls and Rainbow Squirrels
Title: Sugar Skulls and Rainbow Squirrels
Fandom: Women's Soccer RPF
Pairings: Hope Solo/Kelley O'Hara, Ali Krieger/Ashlyn Harris
Characters: Hope Solo, Ashlyn Harris, Alyssa Naeher, Kelley O'Hara
Rating: G
Length: 388 words
Author's Notes: Written for Challenge 421: Trail at fan_flashworks, and fills the "Sugar Skulls" square of one of my 2023 Fall Fest Bingo Cards. Also inspired by the Indian Giant Squirrel, an actual rainbow-colored squirrel.
Summary: Ashlyn teases Hope about a certain freckled defender.
"You two are disgusting," Hope says to the couple sitting across from her.
The team is in the hotel's dining area making sugar skulls. The babysitter watching Christie's and Amy's kids came up with the idea for the kids to do, but when the younger players caught wind of the activity, the whole team got pulled into it.
Hope sits with the other keepers, and Ali, since Ashlyn and Ali never seemed to be apart. Their decorating is slow going because their praise of each other's designs keeps devolving into kisses and nuzzles. Their constant affection is sickeningly sweet and more likely to cause a cavity than the sugar skulls themselves.
The couple turn just enough to look at Hope. The number one keeper is unsuccessfully fighting back a smile, the corner of her lips turned up.
"Oh yeah? What about you and a certain freckled defender?" Ash replies.
Hope smirks and shrugs, "I don't know what you're talking about."
Alyssa chuckles, amused by the teasing.
Suddenly, loud laughter erupts from the other side of the room. "A rainbow-colored squirrel? Really?"
"Yes, really!" The defender in question exclaims. The freckled woman pouts and crosses her arms while Tobin and Alex continue laughing at her. Clearly, they don't believe her.
Hope watches, warmth blooming in her chest. Not too long ago, her, Kelley, and Leo were out walking a trail. Kelley had seen a flash of something and took off into the trees after it. Leo immediately followed and left Hope alone. When Hope had caught up to them, she found Kelley staring up at a multicolored squirrel in awe. The squirrel was double the size of a common grey squirrel, and its fur was a blend of deep red, purple, cream, and beige.
Kelley turned to Hope with child-like excitement, "Can we keep it?"
"No."
"But it's so adorable!"
"It is, but we don't need another squirrel." Hope wrapped an arm around Kelley's shoulders, tucking her into her body, and kissed her forehead. "Come on, let's head back."
Later, Hope gifted Kelley a rainbow-colored squirrel plushie instead.
"Hope? Hope, you're staring." Alyssa catches Hope's attention again before turning back to her sugar skull.
Ash and Ali had already refocused on each other, so no one notices Hope's loving grin as her eyes slide back to her freckled defender.
