Summary: Living in a sentient house had a bit of a learning curve.

Lyssa picked up the phone on the fourth ring. The deep gravelly voice on the other end was as easily recognizable as it was anxiety-producing. A blast from a past she wished to forget. Her decision to keep the old landline seemed less than wise now.

"How did you get this number?" she asked, even though she already knew the answer. She managed to keep her voice steady, an accomplishment for which she wanted bonus points. If the Universe gave out bonus points, that was.

Erik, the ex from hell (Not literally, thankfully. Who needs that kind of extra complication?) started to speak and then the phone went dead. Sighing in relief, she followed the long and twisty cord to the wall it was no longer connected to. There wasn't even a place to connect it to anymore. Ah, shit. The house had swallowed the phone jack. Lyssa put her hand against the wall. "You didn't need to do that, I had it handled."

The wall vibrated as if the house was purring in response. "Thank you. I do appreciate the help." Living in a sentient house had a bit of a learning curve to it, that was for sure.
