Dee didn’t mess about. As soon as the movie he was working on wrapped, he threw the basic necessities in a suitcase and headed for the airport, intent on taking the first available flight to London. If he’d forgotten anything, well, that was what shops were for, and if he came home with more than he’d left with, so what? Prices might be lower in Britain than they were in L.A. The thought of wandering around England’s capital with his lover, shopping and maybe fitting in a bit of sightseeing, made him wish he could just teleport there instead of having to endure a twelve-hour flight. Didn’t matter though, not as long as he got to see his baby at the end of it.
Ryo had been on the other side of the Atlantic for two months by now, doing stunt work on a new TV series, while Dee had been stuck in and around L.A. working on a big action movie. He’s enjoyed the gig, had gotten to do some pretty dramatic stunts, making the lead actor, one of Hollywood’s rising stars, look suitably heroic, but nights alone in the apartment he shared with Ryo had been hard to take. He missed every little thing about his lover and their bed seemed too big and empty without him.
Arriving at the airport, thanks to a last-minute cancellation he was lucky enough to snag a seat aboard a flight due to leave in an hour. It was in economy, but he didn’t care; he could endure any amount of discomfort to reach his destination as soon as possible, and since he only had his hand luggage and one small suitcase, it didn’t take him long to get checked in. Boarding the plane and finding himself in an aisle seat, he just shrugged. It was an overnight flight anyway, very little to see out the window, and he planned on sleeping through most of it. The seats were a bit cramped for someone of his height, but he’d slept in worse places. Sticking his earbuds in place, he turned on his MP3 player, closed his eyes, and relaxed, thinking about how surprised Ryo would be to see him.
The flight flew by, no pun intended, and the plane landed at Heathrow somewhere around ten-thirty, local time. He’d had breakfast on the plane, or what passed for breakfast in economy, but he was starving, so when he got a cab outside the airport, he had the driver take him to MacDonald’s before going on to Pinewood Studios.
“Are you an actor then?” the driver asked, as Dee slid back into the front seat, arms laden with food and two takeaway coffees, one for each of them.
“Nope, stunt man. Just wrapped a movie back in L.A., now I’m joinin’ my buddy on the set of a new TV show. Should be fun.”
They chatted amiably the rest of the way, with the driver pointing out places of interest, and by the time they pulled up outside the studio they were on first-name terms. Dee couldn’t believe how friendly Brits were; he’d always heard they were reserved, even stand-offish, but so far he hadn’t found that to be true at all.
“Thanks for the ride. Maybe I’ll see ya around.” Dee shook hands with Samir, slung his bag over his shoulder, picked up his suitcase, and strode towards the studio entrance, wondering if maybe he should’ve called ahead. He wanted to surprise Ryo, but he could’ve put a call through to Rudy, the stunt coordinator. Then again, he could just ask whoever was at reception to have Rudy paged; having worked together several times, he felt sure there’d be no problem getting Rudy to vouch for him.
Turned out he was right; a quarter hour later, Rudy was leading him across the lot to the soundstage where the series was shooting. It was good to see the older man, but he wasn’t the reason Dee had flown all this way, and Rudy knew it.
“He should be in wardrobe, getting kitted out for the next scene, just a straightforward fistfight, nothing fancy. He’s body double for one of the leads.”
Dee knew that much already from daily skype sessions with his lover.
“Which way?”
“Through that door; wardrobe’s the third door on the left.”
“Thanks, Rudy.”
“Just remember he’s due on set in twenty minutes, and we can’t afford unnecessary delays in filming.”
“Got it, short and sweet, I promise.” There’d be time enough for the big reunion once filming was finished for the day.
Following the directions he’d been given, Dee pushed open the door labelled ‘Wardrobe’, and slipped silently along the aisle between racks of costumes, heading for the changing areas at the back. Ryo was a sight for sore eyes, standing with his back to Dee.
“Hey, babe. Miss me?”
Ryo spun around so fast he almost fell over, and on seeing his lover standing there, his eyes lit up with astonishment and delight. “Dee! What’re you doing here? Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”
“I wanted to surprise you.” Dee grinned. “’Sides, I told ya I’d come over for a visit soon as the movie wrapped, and I always try to keep my promises, so here I am!” Covering the rest of the distance between them in a couple of long strides, he swept his baby into his arms for a long, deep kiss.
“Yes,” Ryo said when they eventually parted.
“Huh?”
“Yes, I missed you, every day and every night, but you should know that already. It’s so good to see you like this, not just a face on the computer screen. How long can you stay?”
“Couple of weeks at least, maybe longer if there’s anything for me to do around here. I put out a few feelers before I left L.A. so you never know, maybe I’ll get to stick around until you’re done with filming.”
“That would be perfect! You can even move into my flat with me.”
“I was hopin’ you’d say that.”
“It might be a bit cramped, but we only have to spend nights there.”
“Baby, I don’t care, not as long as you’re there with me. One thing I know; after two months without ya, I never want us to be apart for that long again.”
“Me neither, but you’ll have to do without me for a little while; I’m due on set in a few minutes.”
“I’ll be right there, watchin’ from behind the cameras.” Dee gave his lover another quick kiss and a pat on the butt. “You’d better finish gettin’ ready; Rudy’ll have my hide if I hold up shootin’. But tonight will be just for us; we’re gonna have your neighbours bangin’ on the walls tellin’ us to keep the noise down.”
“Dee!”
“Hey, reunited after two months apart; we gotta do this thing right!”
Ryo laughed and shook his head. “Just remember I still have to work tomorrow even if you don’t.”
“Fine, whatever you say, babe.” He might have to tone known the celebrations a little, but Dee didn’t mind. All that really mattered was that he and Ryo were together again, the way they should be.
The End
