Summary: Clef wasn't looking forward to experiencing Tokyo's train system.
oOo
After Clef moved across half the world to marry someone he barely knew, Umi gave him two full days to recover from the international flight before throwing him onto Tokyo's public transport system. He was glad for the pause; he'd lived in and around London in his undergrad years, but he'd never really got comfortable with the press of people in the underground or on the buses. He'd seen enough photos of Tokyo's trains to be steeling himself on the third day, when Umi announced at breakfast she was going to take him out to do some sight-seeing.
"I figure we can go over to Odaiba maybe, have a look about. There aren't quite so many people and the breeze off the water might be cooler."
"Are you implying I'm too delicate to handle even the spring heat here?" Clef asked, amused.
Umi grinned at him, shameless. "Yep. You kept dragging me into every shop that looked like it had aircon yesterday."
"…Odaiba. That's in the bay, isn't it?"
"Yep." Umi pulled a map up on her phone and pushed it across the table. "It's here. I figure we can catch the Yurikamome line across, it's more fun than Rinkai."
"Are you going to explain that or leave it as a general ominous statement?" he asked, picking up the last piece of toast as he studied the map.
"Tempting… but it's pretty simple. Yurikamome goes over Rainbow Bridge, Rinkai goes under the bay. You can see a bit more." She pulled her phone back, studying it. "We can wait until midmorning, and maybe stay and eat dinner there, come back late enough to miss the evening rush."
oOo
"You can see a bit more?" Clef shook his head, waving a hand at the window in front of them, while Umi laughed next to him. "A bit? You didn't mention we could sit where the driver should be!"
"Well, I didn't know if the front seats would be free!"
"There's really no drivers on the entire train?" Clef stared out the front of the train, fascinated, as the train moved itself along its path, wheels in deep dips in the concrete track. The main train across the city hadn't been as bad as he'd feared - and the markings for the doors fascinated him. If you knew a station in London you could learn roughly where the doors were likely to end up, but it wasn't that consistent. It wouldn't actually be so bad if you could queue properly and it wasn't a horrible scramble to shove your way on board.
"It's all computers," she promised, as they pulled between the tall buildings of Tokyo.
"Huh." He shook his head, and then shot a smile at her. "This is very bizarre."
"If you think this is bizarre, just wait," she promised, after a moment. "I bet you think the shopping mall we're going to wander about is even more bizarre."
"How can a mall be more bizarre than a train that drives itself?" he murmured.
A while later, he had his answer.
"Why is - this is like a theme park! Why?" He stared about at the shops on the artificial 'european street', the high ceiling painted to look like the sky.
Umi just grinned. "Because they could? I don't know, really. Some of the shops are neat though." A group of international tourists came the other way, exclaiming at things as they passed, and Umi caught hold of his wrist to draw him to one side. She dropped his arm a moment later, flushing slightly. "Sorry."
"It's okay. I'd rather not be separated," he said. "And we're about to be married, aren't we? So holding hands occasionally shouldn't be too much."
He wasn't quite sure if that was pushing things a bit - it had only been three days. But he really didn't mind, and he very much didn't want to turn about and find they'd lost each other.
After a moment, she reached out and took his hand again, and for a moment both of them just looked at their linked fingers - before she shrugged, despite the flush on her cheeks. "I guess this makes it easier to drag you about," she said, and suited her actions to her words, tugging him along the fake road. "Come on, we're here for a snack in the foodhall, unless you want to look at anything closer."
"I could do with buying something small to send back to Emeraude, and something for Ferio, too. And maybe even Lantis and his husband," Clef said, peering curiously at the next store as they moved along. "I don't have to get anything today, though, and - is that a fountain?"
For all Umi kept grinning, he hadn't felt once that she was laughing at him, so much as - enjoying showing him something new. And the day proceeded in the same way, as they wandered about between amusements and arcades and the bay, and it was incredibly easy to spend time together, though they were teasing each other almost every other conversation.
oOo
It took until evening, the lights glittering on the water as they ate in a restaurant where they could see back across the bay towards Tokyo, before Clef looked around at the number of couples and bit his lip. "…Is this a date?" he asked, and felt his face heat. "I'm sorry, I-"
"I guess?" Umi looked around, pulling a face. "I mean, if we're getting married at the weekend, I suppose a full-day date is one way to try catching up. That's not why I thought about here, though."
"Because of the breeze?" Clef said, remembering the morning. It had felt less oppressive out here, even when they were walking outside, and the rain had mostly held off.
He'd enjoyed himself, to be honest.
"Not… really." Umi paused, and he looked at her until she pulled a face at him. "It's really touristy about here, so there's people about who speak english. I figure if you got lost, you'd be able to find someone to help."
It was thoughtful, and strangely sweet. "I guess we found a solution to that, though," he said, glancing at his own hand. "So wherever we go tomorrow, you'll just have to drag me around."
"Definetly."
