Stella was in a great mood. It was her first day off in what seemed like forever and she was going to use it to her full advantage. She’d already slept in later than she usually would. Now, she was heading around the corner to her favourite little café.

“Stella!” the young man behind the counter greeted her.

“Hello Stefan,” she replied.

“The usual?”

“Of course.”

“I’ll bring it over to you,” Stefan said with a wink.

Stella turned around to see if her favourite table was occupied only to see that the occupant was looking back at her. He looked a little older, a little more tired, but she would recognize him and his penetrating blue eyes anywhere.

Mac Taylor was in New Orleans.

He gestured for her to come over with one of his smiles that melted her heart. They were rare, but that made them much more meaningful in Stella’s eyes. She smiled back and walked over, settling down in the chair across from him.

“Hi,” he said, still smiling.

“Hi,” replied Stella with shock, “What are you doing here?”

“I came here for answers.”

Stella was transported to a time where two years ago, she’d told Mac the exact same thing. She’d gone to Greece after an investigation gone awry and some harsh words exchanged with the man in front of her. Despite everything, he’d come to support her and helped her find the answers to some of the questions she’d had.

The trip had also left her with some new questions that were left unanswered.

For years, Stella had felt an attraction between the two of them. She’d tried to ignore it, telling herself that he was only interested in friendship. However, when he’d told her that he’d come to Greece because he cared about her, Stella had realized that perhaps he did feel something more for her than just a friendly bond.

“Stella,” he continued, “I almost died.”

A numbness washed over her. Over the course of their careers, Mac and Stella had faced death numerous times. It was always an experience that shook them up, but they always managed to get through. The look on Mac’s face, however, was one Stella hadn’t seen since the shooting at the bar.

The night of the shooting, Stella had planned to get an answer to the questions she’d formed in Greece. It never happened. Mac had retreated behind the same walls he’d built up after Claire’s death. Stella, who had been a big part of tearing them down the first time, had been dealing with her own trauma. She’d done some things she regretted and while things settled down, Stella had never found the right time to address it.

“I was on a rooftop,” Mac explained, “It was raining. A guy came from behind and attacked me. Next thing I knew, I was staring down the barrel of my own gun.”

Her heart was aching. Stella had been around the other times Mac had almost died in the line of duty. The fear of losing him was always there but being nearby and able to help made her feel a little better. Knowing that he had once again had a brush with death, but she had been 1300 miles away and unaware, hurt her in a way that was indescribable.

She reached out and placed her hand on his as a comforting gesture.

“I know it sounds cliché, but I honestly felt like my life was flashing before my eyes and all I could think of were regrets about things I never did or said.”

She could see pain in his eyes and Stella could feel tears welling up in her own. All she wanted was to take his pain away. Mac had suffered far too much for a man as good as he was in her opinion.

“Stella, I’ve missed you over the past year,” he said, “And when I had that gun in my face, one of my biggest regrets was not telling you how I feel.”

Her heart was beating faster in her chest and Stella wondered if maybe the answers he was looking for were the same as hers.

“Mac?” she whispered softly.

“I love you,” he declared, “I know you might not feel the same but I had to –“

She cut him off by capturing his lips with her own. She filled the kiss with all the feelings she’d left unsaid for years. When she pulled away, Stella could see the emotions welling up in Mac’s eyes.

“For the record,” she replied, “I love you too Mac.”

Mac’s face broke out into the biggest smile she’d ever seen, and she couldn’t help but replicate it. For so long, she’d only dreamed of hearing those words from him. Now that he’d said it, Stella was over the moon.

“You know,” she said suggestively, “It’s my day off and I would love to show you around.”

“Ah,” he replied, “Your partner may have mentioned that it was your day off when I called him.”

“What?!”

“Finding me here wasn’t a coincidence,” he admitted, “Your co-workers were quite informative about where I could find you.”

“Did they tell you that this is my favourite table too?” she asked, incredulous that Mac had taken so much effort to surprise her.

“No. That was definitely a coincidence.”
