The Mystic Nine: Fic: Rise and Shine
Title: Rise and Shine
Fandom: The Mystic Nine
Pairing: Qi Tiezui|Ba Ye/Lt. Zhang Rishan
Rating: G
Notes: No warnings apply
Zhang Rishan crouched beside the bed, staring at its sleeping occupant and wishing he didn't have to leave. Early morning starts were getting more difficult when he had to leave Ba Ye's place as opposed to his nights spent at the barracks or at home where he could roll out of bed and just get on with things without leaving a warm, sleeping lover behind. Still, he thought, at least the advantage of those places was that he wasn't tempted to sleep in, to curl around Ba Ye and just... go back to sleep for another couple of hours, at least until the sun was actually up, if not later. Not that he didn't appreciate the energy and chatter Ba Ye radiated while awake but there was a certain appeal to those mornings where he could wait for Ba Ye to wake by himself, enjoy the sight of him quiet and peaceful as he rarely was at any other time and just be.
Unfortunately, that was not a luxury he had this morning and wishing it was wouldn't make it so. He took another quick glance around the room, checking if there was anything else needed doing before waking Ba Ye. He was fully dressed save his boots and uniform jacket, check. Brazier rebuilt so the room would actually be warm by the time Ba Ye got up for the day, check. The hastily discarded clothes from the night before picked up and folded, check. That was about it. Xiaoman tended to get pissy if he did anything more than that, not liking the perceived encroachment on his territory of looking after Ba Ye, so Rishan would leave the rest to him and save himself the scowls and mutterings about how he should tend to his own master instead. As if Fo Ye needed tending, anyway.
Well, there was nothing else for it, he couldn't stall anymore. Reaching out, he patted Ba Ye's cheek gently, thumb ghosting over his cheekbone in a - mostly - unintentional caress. All that happened was Ba Ye tilting his face into the touch without showing any sign of waking, so Rishan tried again, with the same result.
"Stubborn," he muttered. Even sleeping Ba Ye was stubborn and contrary. Wanted to be woken when Rishan left and then refused to actually wake up when he tried. Typical. Well, if the gentle touch wasn't working... he shifted his hand away from Ba Ye's cheek and tugged on his ear instead. A cross whine and sleepy - and completely unaimed - swat was his reply and he felt himself smiling before shaking his head hurriedly and sighing at himself. When had that become endearing instead of annoying?
"Ba Ye," he tried, giving the other man's ear another light tug. "Wake up."
His efforts were rewarded with another whine and Ba Ye attempting to bury his face in the pillow with all the determination of one intent on not waking before the sun rose. Too bad. He was the one who wanted to be woken up so woken up he would be.
"Ba Ye," he said, more firmly this time, channeling more of 'Lieutenant Zhang' into it, hoping that would have more of an effect. This got more positive results as Ba Ye's eyes opened slowly, blinking up at him blearily before realisation sank in.
"Time to go?"
"Mm."
"What time 's it?"
Rishan grinned. "You really don't want me to answer that."
Ba Ye's nose crinkled in annoyance but any complaints went unvoiced as Ba Ye reached up to cup his cheek. "See you later?"
Rishan turned his face into the touch and brushed a kiss against his palm, reaching out to twine their fingers together afterwards. "Count on it."
Ba Ye was already drifting back to sleep, but there was a smile on his face that Rishan felt echoed on his own and he stroked Ba Ye's hair gently before forcing himself to stand up and leave the room. The day wouldn't wait, after all.
